P1 WiMax

P1 WiMax Wireless Broadband Service is brought to you by Packet One Networks (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd (Subsidary of Green Packet Bhd). Although WiMax licenses has been given out to four companies, Packet One is the first one to roll out their services and is the only company who seems to be making an impact in Malaysia’s wireless broadband industry. So far Packet One is trying to expand their coverage in Kedah, Penang, Johore and of course, in the the Klang Valley. P1 offers high speed broadband and also generous bandwidth allowance.
Connection Speed (Back to top)
P1 WiMax offers speeds of up to 400kbps to 10Mbps (for their Wiggy package). For their 400kbps, 1.2Mbps and 2.4Mbps plans, practical speed sometimes reaches close to its peak speed in some places, which is pretty impressive. Of course, this might be because P1 is pretty new in the market, therefore it has yet to face much network congestion problems. As for their 10Mbps Wiggy package, speeds usually reach 1Mbps to 3Mbps in normal conditions. Therefore, we here at Internet Insider recommend that you stick to the home unit – it’s cheaper and performs just as well. But for a more accurate analysis, summon our Insider to find out exactly how it P1 performs at your area.
Fair Usage Policy (Back to top)
P1 offers a pretty generous bandwidth allowance each month too. For comparison’s sake, let’s take P1’s Home Plus package since that’s the most common package. Compared to other networks, P1 Home Plus package offers 20GB usage per month which defeats Maxis’ (3GB), Digi Explore’s (10GB) and Celcom’s (5GB) monthly allowance by far. Thus, it’s enough for most users and even heavy downloaders.
Coverage (Back to top)
P1’s coverage is far from impeccable. They probably have a third of the Klang Valley covered and also a few areas in Kedah, Penang and Johore. However, from the looks of things, Packet One is working hard to improve their coverage. Therefore, their Wiggy package is not that practical, unless you’re lucky enough to have all the places you want to use it covered. This may explain why the Wiggy was launched so late. Again, we recommend that you stick with the home unit. For the coverage map, click here.
Contract Policy (Back to top)
P1 packages have either a 12 months or a 24 months contract policy. Those who stick with the 24 months contract policy will get the modem for free. Basically when you sign up with P1, you have a seven days satisfaction guarantee policy where if you’re not satisfied with their service within seven days, you can send the modem back to their headquarters or authorised centres and have a full refund in 45 days. If your total usage exceeds 10GB, you must pay a fine of RM50. After the seven days, if you terminate your subscription before the end of your contract, you’ll have to pay a RM999 fine. Compared to other networks, P1 probably has the largest early termination fee. Therefore, be certain of every detail before subscribing to P1. Once you’ve subscribed with them for more than 7 days, there’s no turning back. You may test P1’s performance by summoning our insider.
Ease of Application (Back to top)
P1 WiMax has quite a fast application method. You first need a copy of your identification card or passport, another proof of identification (ie. driving license) and RM100 for the upfront payment. Then after filling some forms, your account could be activated within a few hours. Contact us here if you are interested in signing up for P1.
Extra Stuff (Back to top)
Theoretically, P1 WiMax could be used up to the tenth floor. However, this could vary from area to area. And lastly, P1 has already stopped giving out free 15 days trial.
